Revision on Karnataka's Textbooks

The Karnataka Government ordered a revision of the content of Kannada and Social Science textbooks for Classes VI to X on Saturday, with 18 major revisions, including 15 lesson replacements. Before the elections, Congress promised to reverse some of the changes made in textbooks during the previous BJP rule if elected.

The vast range of syllabuses is an essential contributing factor to the variation in the graph of education and progress in different states. There are various syllabuses in the Indian education system, the most prevalent of which are ICSE, CBSE, and state syllabuses. Each syllabus has its own set of criteria and objectives, based on which students’ knowledge and skills will vary. The most recent alteration and revision in Karnataka state textbooks support the preceding statements.

Revision on Karnataka's Textbooks

India is a developing country noted for its diverse culture and traditions. When we use the term ‘developing,’ we indicate that there are fresh forward ideas and developments coming from India, but there are also certain gaps when compared to other countries. As Indians, it is our collective responsibility to investigate this and contribute to the progress of our country. This could lead to the discovery of various development variables such as technologies, industries, environmental demands, jobs, and, most significantly, education.

Let’s See What are the Changes that are Made in the Textbooks of Karnataka State:

Among the significant changes announced by the Karnataka Textbook Society are the replacement of RSS founder K.B. Hedgewar’s ‘Nijavada Adarsha Purusha Yaragabeku’ with ‘Sukumara Swamiya Kathe’ by Shivakotyacharya in Class X Kannada textbook and ‘Kalavannu Geddavaru’ by K.T. Gatti on Hindutva ideologue V.D.

Other modifications include replacing ‘Bhoo Kailasa,’ a drama by Parampalli Narasimha Aithal, in the Class VIII Kannada textbook with ‘Magalige Bareda Patra,’ a translation of Jawaharlal Nehru’s letter to Indira Gandhi. Sara Aboobacker’s ‘Yudha’ has replaced Shatavadhani R. Ganesh’s ‘Shreshta Bharatiya Chintanegalu’ in the Class X Kannada textbook.

The prose composition ‘Taayi Bharatiya Amara Putraru’ by Hindutva supporter Chakravarthy Sulibele has been withdrawn from the Class X Kannada textbook with no replacement. H.S. Anupama’s ‘Savitribai Phule’ lesson has replaced Ramanandacharya’s ‘Saamajika Kalakaliya Modala Shikshaki’ in the Class VII Kannada textbook.

In the Field of Social Science:

The Social Science curriculum has been tweaked and modified, including the inclusion of the modules ‘Culture of the Vedic Period’ and ‘Rise of New Religions,’ as well as a human rights component in the Class VI textbook.

In the lesson on the Princely States, they have also incorporated components on the Wadiyar rulers, Sir M. Visvesvaraya, and Sir Mirza Ismail, as well as components on ‘Women Social Reformers’ and ‘Women Freedom Fighters’ in the Class VII Social Science textbook.

When It Comes to Linguistic Pride:

Surprisingly enough, adjustments have been made to how the terms “Regionalism” and “Linguistic Pride” are described in a lesson in the Class X textbook. Sentences claiming that linguistic and regional pride are antithetical to the concept of nationalism have been removed.

With the aforementioned changes, the textbook committee has reinstated the majority of the components put in place by a committee led by writer Baragur Ramachandrappa between 2013 and 2018, when the Congress administration was in office. Following the BJP government’s election in 2019, a committee led by Rohith Chakrathirtha modified textbooks to include multiple lessons on Hindutva ideologues.

Numbers are Regulated:

While the governing body had previously stated that 45 adjustments will be made to textbooks, the number of revisions has been minimized to avoid confusion among students who have already received the textbooks.

According to the Government’s decree, the amendments would be distributed to all schools as a corrigendum, and the changes would also be announced on the Department’s website.
