The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) announced an agreement today to develop an IIT Delhi campus in Abu Dhabi. The agreement was signed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The new Memorandum of Understanding is part of the ‘IITs Go Global’ strategy. After IIT Madras Zanzibar, this will be the second foreign IIT campus.
Notably, IIT Delhi will be the second overseas IIT campus after IIT Madras, which announced that its foreign campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania, will open in October 2023. Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan provided details about the development, saying, “IIT Delhi’s Abu Dhabi campus to set the template for leveraging the power of knowledge for mutual prosperity and global good,” Dharmendra Pradhan stated.
“In the presence of Hon. PM @narendramodiji, the MoU for the establishment of the @iitdelhi campus in Abu Dhabi opens a new chapter in the internationalisation of India’s education,” Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan tweeted.
Meanwhile, PM Modi remarked in a tweet, “This marks a significant step forward in our educational internationalisation and demonstrates India’s innovation prowess.” Education is the glue that holds us together, the spark that inspires invention. We shall use this power for mutual benefit and world good if we work together.”
