As India prepares to mark the third anniversary of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 on July 29, 2023, IIT Guwahati stands out for its unwavering commitment to offering a holistic education and nurturing academic and research excellence. Following NEP 2020 objectives, the institute has embarked on a phased implementation plan to foster student innovation and produce a workforce capable of tackling the nation’s concerns.

In addition to these initiatives, IIT Guwahati is already providing alternatives for numerous exits and migration between programmes to make quality education more accessible to students. To make the alternatives even more flexible, as envisioned in NEP 2020, a committee has been formed within the institute to study them and provide recommendations regularly.
NEP 2020 was established on July 29, 2020, to bring systemic reforms to the country’s Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). In this regard, IIT Guwahati has incorporated essential NEP 2020 characteristics through a variety of inter-, multi-, and trans-disciplinary activities.
The top institute seeks to provide abundant possibilities for holistic development for its students and is trying to achieve the targets established under the framework of NEP-2020, according to IITG’s Officiating Director Prof Parameswar K Iyer at a press conference.
“The NEP 2020 has set up the base for streamlining several progressive objectives, which is expected to help achieve academic and research excellence in the institutes of higher education,” he said.
“The institute’s flexible curriculum provides an option for undergraduate students to spend one full semester at industries and research laboratories for internships or project work.”Similarly, an internship is an option for post-graduate students, and on the entrepreneurial front, initiatives related to the introduction of techno-entrepreneurship and small business development programmes for students have been included in the curriculum,” he added.
Prof Gautam Barua, Director of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Guwahati, stated that the vision and provisions of the NEP are so “vast and holistic” that all of its provisions can be expected to be completely operationalized by 2040.
