The United States on Monday carried out retaliatory strikes against Iran-backed militia groups in Iraq, including Kataib Hezbollah, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement. The strikes followed attacks against U.S. personnel in Iraq and Syria amid growing anger in the Middle East over U.S. support for Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. In his Christmas message, Pope Francis appealed for an end to the war and the release of all hostages.
