Following the signing of an agreement between the education authorities of the two nations during the visit of external affairs minister S. Jaishankar to the African nation, the first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus outside the country would be established in Tanzania.
India’s Foreign Policy and NEP
In recent years, cooperation in education-including the establishment of Indian university campuses overseas and student mobility-has become a significant part of India’s foreign policy. Additionally, the action is in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which states that “high performing Indian universities will be encouraged to set up campuses in other countries.”
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
In the presence of Jaishankar and the president of Zanzibar, Hussein Ali Mwinyi, the memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the establishment of the IIT-Madras campus in Zanzibar was signed on Wednesday between the education ministries of India and Zanzibar and Tanzania.
Zanzibar is an archipelago off the coast of East Africa that joined Tanganyika to establish the United Republic of Tanzania in 1964. It is a Tanzanian region with some autonomy.
According to a statement made on Thursday by the Union Education Ministry, the IIT campus will begin offering courses in October.
Connection With IIT Madras
“IIT-Madras shall determine the admission requirements, and the institute will award degrees. For the offshore facility, pedagogical planning will be the responsibility of IIT-Madras, according to a senior official in the education ministry.
The action, according to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, is a first step in the Internationalisation of Indian education. “The project is a physical representation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to strengthen South-South cooperation and build closer inter-human connections with Africa.
