Three sons of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh were martyred Wednesday in an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip, relatives and official Hamas media said.
In an interview with Qatari media, Haniyeh identified his slain children as Hazem, Amir and Mohammad.
He also said a number of his grandchildren were also martyred in the Israeli attack, joining dozens of his relatives who have been killed in the war so far.
“Through the blood of the martyrs and the pain of the injured, we create hope, we create the future, we create independence and freedom for our people and our nation,” the Hamas leader said.
Haniyeh saud his children were visiting relatives for Eid at the Shati refugee camp in northern Gaza when they were targeted.
The Hamas chief decried what he described as Israel’s brutality, but he stressed that Palestinian leaders will not back down if their families and homes are targeted.
“There is no doubt that this criminal enemy is driven by the spirit of revenge and the spirit of murder and bloodshed, and it does not observe any standards or laws,” Haniyeh said, adding that 60 members of his family have been martyred since the start of the war.
“We’ve seen it violate everything on the land of Gaza. There is a war of ethnic cleansing and genocide. There is mass displacement.”
In Gaza, Palestinian Muslims celebrate the Eid al-Fitr holiday while enduring the violence and starvation of Israel’s war.
Israel’s military offensive in the Gaza Strip has martyred at least 33,482 Palestinians and wounded 76,049 since October 7, the Palestinian enclave’s health ministry said on Wednesday.
There have been 122 Palestinians martyred and 56 injured in the past 24 hours, the ministry statement added.
